First round of the presidential election in France: The people of France make the choice of the political and institutional renewal
23 April 2017
In recent years, endogenous and exogenous events have made more than one observer doubt about the choice that the people of France would make in the face of unprecedented hardships. Doubt was all the more pronounced in that the political upheaval ranged from total isolationism to assimilation, to blind austerity.
On this Sunday, April 23, the People of France brought its first answer. Again, when he was most expected on his capacity for self-criticism, when he was most expected in France, Overseas, Europe and the world, the people of France decided and chose To live up to its history and history. He chose renewal and institutional overcoming. He chose Europe! He declared himself to be dissuaded at nearly 20% and chose the renewal at nearly 24%. Here is France, which has always reasoned in us. This was the France that was expected. This is the audacious France to which distant countries like to refer.
The people of France deserve to be congratulated for their serenity, their audacity and their understanding of their destiny. Obviously, what would an African intellectual have to rejoice at the attitude of the people of France? What would we have to rejoice at the election of a President whose only mission is to defend the interests of France and its people? Well, it certainly is not to defend the interests of Africa. It is mainly because, as in the interior of France, in certain regions of Africa, the French presidential campaign has played its part and promises have been made. The political and institutional renewal chosen and expressed by the people of France is the one to which many peoples of Africa have been striving for decades. They are very close to the people of France by history, geography, culture, language and trials.
The African intelligentsia has also evolved greatly. We have reached a stage where we are convinced that the relationship between Africa and its historic partners is a solid relationship that is bound to perpetuate itself. But we have also come to the conviction that the interests of France, that which has been expressed today for the political and institutional renewal, are in no way incompatible with the political, social, economic and democratic progress in Africa. The relations between France and Africa can no longer be binary: winners (France, French groups, and French networks) - losers (the vast majority of African populations). This relationship must be built on the understanding and trust between parties on the reciprocal interests to be defended beyond the incestuous personal relations maintained for too long between tyrants of the south and receivers of the north.
This hope which is reborn in us is not a grievance or a permission that we address to the French leaders. We are no longer in those days. It is rather a proposal made at a time when the state of mind of a majority of French and African peoples is in symbiosis. And the reason for this is simply because we still believe that the relationship between France and Africa is useful and that it is possible to transform it for the benefit of both parties.
Will the political and constitutional renewal expressed by the people of France go to the end of its logic? We have hope. We had hopes of the right and hopes of the left. Today, there is a new hope. Will he be disappointed in his turn?
